Integrating UX in a Non-UX Team
June 2022

Outside of BAU, educating and setting up UX process in a team as a sole designer and researcher where there was no previous UX history in the team. Includes education and heavy collaboration with developers and office hours.

Problem Statement
The team did not have any UX process which resulted in many repetitive processes to satisfy users without research nor with a thorough design process. The process showed that in the long run we were spending a lot of time on resolving miscommunications and fixing bugs.

There was a lack of consistency in user experience and thus lack of user satisfaction. The process was also confusing and users had to spend a lot of time understanding the application and its usage.
4-Step Solution
Initiated and led the team to follow a standardized UX process similar to the wider organization's and the "Double Diamond", embedded with the existing Software Development Lifecycle.

This consists of identifying the problem statement, defining user needs, designing with appropriate tools and UX methods, and delivering the right design whilst seeking for user feedback. The key here is to work dynamically with both the developers and users and keeping them in the loop throughout the project, and creating a collaborative work process.
Incorporated Figma for wireframing and prototyping, and taught developers how to use the tool efficiently for design hand-offs. I also worked with developers to establish a feedback loop, including the users using Figma.
Led the migration to the latest design system used in the wider organization. This helped save time from technical perspective in the long run, and be consistent with the organization's goals and standards.
Applied appropriate styling following the new design system
Changed center aligned texts to left or right aligned to improve readability and efficiency
Changed to correct components such as Tags to Badges
Worked with the central design system team to help improve the library
Hosted triweekly workshop for the development teams for a year, to educate and raise awareness on what UX means, and its importance for striving long term benefits for the team and the users. Sessions included laws of UX and other fundamentals, such as UX writing, component names and usages, and UX research, as well as busting common UX myths.
